Retaining Wall Guide for Brisbane Homeowners: Types, Costs & Council Rules
Brisbane's hilly terrain means retaining walls are one of the most common construction projects in South East Queensland. Whether you're building on a sloping block, creating a flat backyard, or preventing erosion, a well-built retaining wall is essential.
Types of Retaining Walls
Concrete Block Retaining Walls
The most popular choice for Brisbane homes. Concrete blocks are strong, durable, and can be rendered or painted to match your home. They're ideal for walls up to 1.5 metres high and can be engineered for taller applications.
Cost: $250 – $450 per lineal metre (including footings)
Timber Sleeper Retaining Walls
A cost-effective option that works well for garden beds and low walls. Treated pine sleepers are the most affordable, while hardwood sleepers offer a premium look.
Cost: $150 – $350 per lineal metre
Concrete Retaining Walls
Poured concrete walls are the strongest option and ideal for high walls or walls that need to support significant loads (like a driveway above). They can be left as raw concrete or rendered.
Cost: $350 – $600 per lineal metre
Boulder Retaining Walls
Natural rock boulders create a rustic, natural look. They're popular in Brisbane's leafy suburbs and work well for gentle slopes.
Cost: $200 – $400 per lineal metre
Do You Need Council Approval?
In Brisbane, the rules are straightforward:
- Under 1 metre high: Generally no approval needed (but must comply with building codes)
- Over 1 metre high: Requires a building approval from Brisbane City Council
- Near a boundary: Walls within 1.5m of a boundary may need neighbour notification
- Near services: Check for underground services (water, sewer, electricity) before digging
We always recommend getting a soil test and engineering design for walls over 1 metre. This ensures the wall is designed for Brisbane's clay soils and won't fail during heavy rain.
Drainage Is Critical
The number one reason retaining walls fail in Brisbane is poor drainage. Our clay soils hold water, and hydrostatic pressure can push a wall over. Every retaining wall we build includes:
- Ag pipe (agricultural drainage pipe) behind the wall
- Gravel backfill to allow water to drain freely
- Weep holes at the base of the wall
- Proper compaction of the backfill material
How Long Does a Retaining Wall Last?
With proper construction and drainage:
- Concrete block walls: 50+ years
- Poured concrete walls: 50+ years
- Hardwood sleeper walls: 15-25 years
- Treated pine sleeper walls: 10-15 years
