How to Maintain Your Concrete Driveway in Brisbane
A quality concrete driveway should last 25-30 years or more with proper maintenance. But Brisbane's harsh UV, heavy rain, and occasional hailstorms mean your driveway needs a bit of care to stay looking its best.
Here's our complete guide to maintaining your concrete driveway in Brisbane.
1. Regular Cleaning
The simplest and most effective maintenance is regular cleaning:
- Weekly: Sweep or blow off leaves and debris. Organic matter left on concrete can cause staining.
- Monthly: Hose down the driveway to remove dust and light dirt.
- Quarterly: Pressure wash or scrub with a concrete-safe cleaner for a deeper clean.
Removing Common Stains
- Oil stains: Apply a degreaser or dishwashing liquid, scrub with a stiff brush, and rinse. For stubborn stains, use a commercial concrete degreaser.
- Rust stains: Use a rust-specific concrete cleaner (available from hardware stores). Avoid bleach, which can damage the surface.
- Tyre marks: Pressure washing usually removes tyre marks. For stubborn marks, use a concrete degreaser.
- Mould/algae: Mix 1 part bleach to 10 parts water, apply, let sit for 10 minutes, then pressure wash. This is common in shaded areas of Brisbane driveways.
2. Sealing Your Driveway
Sealing is the single most important maintenance task for concrete driveways, especially in Brisbane's UV-intense climate.
When to Seal
- New driveways: First seal at 28 days after pouring (once fully cured)
- Maintenance resealing: Every 2-3 years for exposed aggregate, every 3-5 years for plain concrete
- Signs you need resealing: Water no longer beads on the surface, colour appears faded, surface feels rough
Types of Sealers
- Penetrating sealers: Soak into the concrete to protect from within. Best for driveways as they don't create a slippery film.
- Topical sealers: Sit on the surface creating a glossy or matte finish. Great for enhancing colour but can become slippery when wet.
- Acrylic sealers: The most common choice for Brisbane driveways. Good UV protection and available in gloss or matte.
DIY vs Professional Sealing
While you can seal a driveway yourself, professional sealing ensures:
- Correct product selection for your concrete type
- Proper surface preparation (cleaning and drying)
- Even application without streaks or puddles
- Better longevity from professional-grade products
3. Crack Prevention and Repair
Small cracks are normal in concrete and don't necessarily indicate a problem. However, they should be addressed before they grow.
Preventing Cracks
- Control joints: These are the grooves cut into your driveway. They're designed to control where cracks occur. Make sure they're kept clean and sealed.
- Tree roots: Keep large trees away from your driveway. Roots can lift and crack concrete over time.
- Heavy vehicles: Avoid parking heavy vehicles (trucks, caravans) on residential driveways not designed for that weight.
Repairing Cracks
- Hairline cracks (< 3mm): Fill with a concrete crack filler from your hardware store. These are cosmetic and rarely structural.
- Larger cracks (3-10mm): Use a flexible concrete repair compound. These may indicate movement and should be monitored.
- Major cracks (> 10mm): Consult a professional. Large cracks may indicate sub-base failure or structural issues.
4. Seasonal Care for Brisbane
Summer (UV Protection)
- Ensure your driveway is properly sealed before summer
- UV is the biggest enemy of concrete sealers in Brisbane
- Consider a UV-resistant sealer for maximum protection
Wet Season (Drainage)
- Check that water drains away from your driveway and house
- Clear any blocked drainage channels or grates
- Remove debris that could block water flow
Storm Season
- Inspect for any damage after severe storms or hail
- Remove fallen branches and debris promptly
- Check for any new cracks or chips
5. What NOT to Do
- Don't use harsh chemicals like muriatic acid on exposed aggregate
- Don't pressure wash too close — keep the nozzle at least 30cm from the surface
- Don't use metal shovels or sharp tools on the surface
- Don't ignore drainage issues — water pooling on or near your driveway causes long-term damage
- Don't park heavy machinery on residential driveways
When to Call a Professional
Contact a concreter if you notice:
- Cracks wider than 10mm or growing rapidly
- Sections of concrete sinking or lifting
- Large areas of surface deterioration (spalling)
- Drainage problems causing water to pool
