How to Maintain Your Concrete Driveway in Brisbane's Climate

Your concrete driveway is built to last, but Brisbane's climate doesn't make it easy. Between intense UV radiation, summer storms, and the occasional hailstorm, even the best-poured slab needs regular care to stay in top condition.

Here's a practical, season-by-season maintenance guide from the team at Concrete Concepts Group — based on what we see working (and failing) across hundreds of Brisbane driveways every year.

Why Maintenance Matters in South East Queensland

Brisbane sits in one of Australia's most UV-intense zones. The combination of direct sun exposure, high humidity, and heavy seasonal rainfall creates a unique set of challenges for concrete surfaces:

  • UV degradation breaks down sealers faster than in southern states
  • Thermal expansion from 35°C+ summer days causes micro-cracking
  • Storm water can erode edges and wash soil from beneath slab edges
  • Mould and algae thrive in shaded, humid areas — especially during the wet season

A well-maintained driveway lasts 30+ years. A neglected one can start showing serious problems within 10 to 15 years.

1. Regular Cleaning (Monthly)

The simplest and most effective thing you can do is keep your driveway clean. Leaves, dirt, and organic matter trap moisture against the surface, encouraging mould growth and staining.

What to do:

  • Sweep or leaf-blow the surface weekly
  • Hose down the entire driveway monthly
  • Pressure wash every 3 to 6 months (2,000–3,000 PSI is ideal for concrete)
  • Clean oil or fuel spills immediately with a degreaser — don't let them soak in

Pro tip: When pressure washing, keep the nozzle at least 30cm from the surface and use a fan tip, not a pinpoint jet. Too much pressure in one spot can etch the concrete.

2. Sealing Your Driveway (Every 2–3 Years)

Sealing is the single most important maintenance task for Brisbane driveways. A quality sealer protects against:

  • UV damage and colour fading
  • Water penetration and salt attack
  • Oil and chemical stains
  • Mould and algae growth

How often to seal:

Finish TypeSealing FrequencySealer Type
Plain concreteEvery 3–4 yearsPenetrating silane/siloxane
Exposed aggregateEvery 2–3 yearsAcrylic or polyurethane
Coloured concreteEvery 2–3 yearsUV-stable acrylic
Stamped concreteEvery 2–3 yearsHigh-gloss or matte acrylic

When to seal: The best time to reseal in Brisbane is during the dry season — April to September. You need at least 48 hours of dry weather for the sealer to cure properly. Avoid sealing during summer storm season.

How to tell if your sealer has worn off: Pour a small amount of water on the surface. If it beads up, the sealer is still working. If it soaks in and darkens the concrete, it's time to reseal.

3. Crack Repair (As Needed)

Small cracks are normal in concrete — they're caused by shrinkage during curing and natural ground movement. The key is to address them before they become big problems.

Hairline cracks (under 2mm): These are cosmetic and can be left alone or filled with a concrete crack filler from Bunnings. They won't affect the structural integrity of your slab.

Cracks between 2mm and 5mm: Fill these with a flexible polyurethane sealant. Rigid fillers will crack again as the concrete moves with temperature changes.

Cracks wider than 5mm: These may indicate a structural issue — sub-base failure, tree root pressure, or inadequate reinforcement. Get a professional assessment before patching.

Important: Never use a rigid cement-based filler for cracks in a driveway. Brisbane's temperature swings (from 5°C winter mornings to 40°C summer afternoons) mean the concrete is constantly expanding and contracting. You need a flexible filler that moves with the slab.

4. Edge Maintenance

Driveway edges are the most vulnerable part of the slab. Without proper support, edges can crack, chip, and crumble — especially if vehicles drive over them.

Prevention tips:

  • Keep garden beds and soil built up against the slab edges to provide lateral support
  • Avoid driving on the outer 150mm of the slab — this area has the least support
  • If you notice soil washing away from under the edges during storms, backfill with compacted road base

5. Weed and Root Control

Weeds growing through cracks aren't just unsightly — their roots widen existing cracks and create new ones. Tree roots are an even bigger concern, as they can lift and crack entire sections of slab.

What to do:

  • Pull weeds as soon as they appear in cracks or expansion joints
  • Apply a non-selective herbicide (like glyphosate) to joints and cracks twice a year
  • If you have large trees within 3 metres of your driveway, consider installing a root barrier
  • Keep expansion joints clean and filled with a flexible backer rod and sealant

6. Stain Removal Guide

Different stains need different treatments. Here's what works for the most common Brisbane driveway stains:

Stain TypeTreatmentNotes
Oil/greaseDegreaser + stiff brush + pressure washTreat within 24 hours for best results
RustOxalic acid solution (available at Bunnings)Don't use on coloured concrete
Tyre marksPressure wash at 3,000 PSIHot water works better than cold
Mould/algaeBleach solution (1:10) or commercial mould killerRinse thoroughly after treatment
Leaf tanninPressure wash + oxalic acid if stubbornCommon under mango and poinciana trees
Paint spillsPaint stripper for dried paint, water for wetAct fast — dried paint is much harder

Seasonal Maintenance Calendar for Brisbane

SeasonTasks
Summer (Dec–Feb)Monthly hose-down, check for new cracks after heat waves, clean mould in shaded areas
Autumn (Mar–May)Best time to reseal, clear leaf debris, check expansion joints
Winter (Jun–Aug)Pressure wash, repair any cracks before wet season, apply herbicide to joints
Spring (Sep–Nov)Final chance to seal before storms, check edges for erosion, clean stains

When to Call a Professional

Most driveway maintenance is straightforward DIY work. However, you should call a professional concreter if you notice:

  • Cracks wider than 5mm or cracks that are growing
  • Sections of slab that have sunk or lifted
  • Widespread spalling (surface flaking) across more than 30% of the area
  • Water pooling against your house or garage
  • Tree roots visibly lifting the concrete

These issues usually indicate problems below the slab that surface treatments can't fix.

The Bottom Line

A concrete driveway is a significant investment — typically $3,000 to $8,000 depending on size and finish. Spending an hour or two on maintenance every few months protects that investment and can add 10 to 15 years to your driveway's lifespan.

The three non-negotiables for Brisbane driveways are: clean regularly, seal every 2–3 years, and fix cracks early. Do those three things and your driveway will look great for decades.
