One of the most common questions we get from Brisbane homeowners is whether to go with exposed aggregate or plain (standard) concrete. Both are excellent choices, but they suit different budgets, aesthetics, and use cases.
Here's an honest comparison to help you decide.
What Is Exposed Aggregate?
Exposed aggregate concrete uses the same base mix as standard concrete, but with decorative stones and pebbles mixed in. After the concrete is poured and begins to set, the top layer of cement paste is washed away to reveal the natural stone underneath.
The result is a textured, visually rich surface with natural colour variation. It's one of the most popular finishes across South East Queensland for driveways, pathways, pool surrounds, and entertaining areas.
What Is Plain Concrete?
Plain concrete (also called standard or broom-finished concrete) is the classic grey finish most people picture when they think of concrete. It can be finished smooth with a steel trowel or given a light broom texture for grip.
It's clean, functional, and cost-effective — and when poured well, it looks sharp and professional.
Cost Comparison
| Factor | Plain Concrete | Exposed Aggregate |
|---|---|---|
| Material cost per m² | $65 – $85 | $100 – $150 |
| Typical driveway (50m²) | $3,250 – $4,250 | $5,000 – $7,500 |
| Sealing (required) | Optional | Every 2–3 years |
| Lifespan | 25–30 years | 25–35 years |
Exposed aggregate costs more upfront, but many homeowners find the aesthetic upgrade and added property value well worth the investment.
Durability and Maintenance
Plain concrete is low-maintenance. An occasional pressure wash keeps it looking clean. Sealing is recommended but not essential. The main downside is that it can stain more visibly — oil drips, tyre marks, and rust stains show up clearly on a light grey surface.
Exposed aggregate is inherently more stain-resistant because the textured surface disguises marks. However, it does require resealing every two to three years to protect the exposed stones and prevent the surface from becoming rough or chalky. In Brisbane's UV-intense climate, a quality sealer is non-negotiable.
Slip Resistance
This is where exposed aggregate really shines. The natural stone texture provides excellent grip, even when wet. This makes it the preferred choice for:
- Pool surrounds and wet areas
- Sloped driveways
- Pathways and entrance areas
Plain concrete with a broom finish also offers good grip, but a smooth steel-trowelled finish can become slippery when wet.
Aesthetic Appeal
Plain concrete suits modern, minimalist home designs. It provides a clean canvas that doesn't compete with landscaping or architectural features. It can also be coloured with oxide pigments for a more custom look.
Exposed aggregate adds warmth, texture, and character. The natural stone colours — ranging from warm honey tones to cool greys — complement Queensland's outdoor lifestyle and blend beautifully with timber, stone, and garden surrounds.
Our Recommendation
For driveways on a budget, plain concrete with a broom finish is hard to beat. It's durable, clean, and does the job well.
For feature areas like front entries, entertaining spaces, pool surrounds, and properties where street appeal matters, exposed aggregate delivers a premium result that genuinely adds value.
Many of our clients choose a combination — exposed aggregate for the driveway and front path, with plain concrete for side paths and utility areas. This gives you the best of both worlds while keeping costs manageable.
